Is it safe to use washable markers on toddler skin?
Not really. Crayola-style markers are labeled non-toxic for paper, not skin contact.
What's actually in it
Washable markers are labeled "non-toxic" under ASTM D-4236, meaning they won't poison a child who swallows a small amount. They aren't dermatologically tested for skin use. Skin absorbs dye components and solvents more readily than the digestive system.
What the research says
A 2025 screening study in Environ Sci Technol documented widespread fragrance and dye chemicals in consumer products.
For face painting and body art on kids, use products rated for skin (FDA-approved face paint or skin-safe markers). Regular washable markers are fine on paper.
